Find out more about the MG MG3

Is the MG3 a good car?

This is the new MG3, and it’s set to right the wrongs of its predecessor. The old MG3 is one of the lowest-rated cars on Carwow thanks to its antiquated engine and dismal interior - but the new model promises to be a much more upmarket offering.

In a way, it’s a bit like Rishi Sunak - it would almost be impossible for it to fall short of the standards set by its predecessor.

All models feature a self-charging hybrid engine, and coming well stocked with standard equipment the new MG3 remains a really affordable alternative to the likes of the Renault Clio and Toyota Yaris. In fact, it’s the cheapest full hybrid car on sale in the UK.

That hybrid system produces a really beefy 191hp, giving it almost a 50hp advantage over a Renault Clio and more than 75hp over a standard Toyota Yaris. It’s no wonder that MG claims a swift 8.0 seconds for the new MG3 to get from 0-62mph.

That performance doesn’t come at the expense of efficiency, with MG claiming an official 64mpg. That is, however, slightly less economical than the 67.3mpg or 68.9mpg claimed by the Renault Clio and Toyota Yaris respectively. We’ll have to try out the MG3 on the road to see how close it comes to those claims.

However, the official CO2 figure of just 100g/km should make the MG3 a very affordable company car option, as well as result in affordable first year road tax.

The new MG3 looks like it'll be amazing value - hopefully it's cheap and cheerful, like its predecessor wasn't

The MG3’s interior looks very similar to the MG4 EV’s - with what appears to be the same steering wheel, rotary drive selector and infotainment screen. During plenty of time with an MG4 we found the interior to be well-built and easy enough to use, though not particularly slick and with some less-than-premium material choices. You can expect the MG3 to offer much of the same.

It’s also going to offer loads of standard equipment. The UK range starts with ‘SE’ trim, which gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on its 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, four USB ports and a rear parking camera, plus a full suite of safety equipment.

Top-spec Trophy adds on a 360-degree camera, keyless entry and faux-leather upholstery.

The new MG3 is bigger than the model it replaces - that promises not just more legroom, but a 298-litre boot which is significantly larger than the Toyota Yaris, though slightly smaller than the 300 litres of a Renault Clio hybrid. Non-hybrid Clios have more space still.

Later on, MG’s expected to launch an even cheaper MG3, with a plain petrol engine and a manual gearbox. Details of this haven’t been fully announced yet.

Even the range-topping MG3 Trophy costs just £20,495, despite its extensive equipment list.
