Mercedes SLS Roadster

- Stunning looks
- Huge power
- Sounds incredible
- Slightly disappointing interior
- The Ferrari 458 Spider exists
- Little else...
It is only slightly heavier than the coupe and so performance remains pretty much unaltered. Interestingly, many experts think that it is a better car than the coupe, saying that it handles - and sounds - much better, helping to explain why Mercedes predict that 40 per cent of SLSs sold will be Roadsters.
Interior
Inside it’s beautifully designed inside, with a quality of finish that is wholly in line with the price tag. There are some lovely flourishes and neat details, making it a joy to be in there. However a few critics say it looks a bit like any other Mercedes, and lacks drama.
The seats are very comfortable and supportive and there is a wide range of adjustment available too, so everyone should be able to find a comfortable driving position.
It’s all about the roof though, and no one will find this one wanting. Comprising three layers of fabric, it is snug and weatherproof when it’s raised, and allows draft-free touring into three figures when it’s lowered.
Driving
Some critics say that the SLS Roadster is even better than the coupe to drive, thanks to the rousing soundtrack that is even more alluring with the loss of the sound-deadening roof. It also feels a lot faster than the tin-top too with some saying that it also handles a little bit better.
Others say that it displays exactly the same dynamics as the coupe; either way you can be assured that it handles, rides, steers, and brakes impeccably. There really is no downside to the drop-top SLS; as one writer wrote: “it turns the experience up to 11”.
Engine
There is just the one engine available – but what an engine it is! The 6.2-litre V8 develops 571bhp and 479lb ft of torque, enough to hurl the SLS to 62mph in 3.8 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 197mph.
It’s not just about the headline figures, either. One motoring journalist said that the engine offers “oodles of torque from 1000rpm onwards”, adding that this makes it a “very easy engine to live with”. When the throttle is prodded though it delivers in a “spectacular” way, with massive and instant urge available at any engine or road speed.
Value for money
The price premium over the coupe is relatively small, but that’s just the start. There are lots of optional extras that you’ll probably think are must-haves, so you should view the basic price as the start of a journey, rather than a destination. Residual values should be decent.
Worth noting
The roof can be folded in just 11 seconds and at speeds of up to 31mph. It also stays partly exposed when it’s folded, allowing boot space to remain at an impressive 173 litres.
Conclusion
If you can afford the high purchase price then it is unlikely that you will ever regret buying a Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster. The retro-looks, modern interior, and blistering performance are the stuff that dreams are made of.
