Interior
The good news is that space has improved. The old Micra was never too bad, but the new one is even easier to get into and sit in when you’re done. Unfortunately, though the Micra is cheap to buy the interior plastics don’t even live up to their basic billing, nor do they look that impressive.
Driving
The old Micra was still a tidy handler right up until replacement. The new one has been designed for a global, mainly developing world market and then re-tuned for European tastes. As such the ride is decent and the steering is light, but it’s a long way from being a driver’s car, and that’s before you compare it to class leaders like the Fiesta.
Engines
There are two engines available in the Micra - a 79bhp 1.2 three cylinder, and an incredibly clever “Miller cycle” supercharged version of the engine with better performance and even better economy (69mpg). The latter can be summed up by saying it’s a great little engine in a completely undeserving car. The former engine is very smooth and likes to rev. They’re probably the Micra’s best aspects.
Value for money
Value is a relative term. The Micra is a relatively cheap car and so will appeal to budget-orientated buyers. However, most testers say that it feels and looks even cheaper than it should, so whether that represents good value or not is up to you. It is at least very economical, so should be cheap to run.
Worth noting
If you owned a previous Micra and liked its fun nature and good quality feel, the new model may disappoint. The supercharged model is the best current Micra, but if you’re looking for cheapness, the basic 1.2 will suffice.
Conclusion
The Micra’s poor reviews are representative of a car that’s built down to a price, there are far better options available on the market that cost the same. Avoid.
