The 1.6 dCi is the most recently launched engine in the Nissan Qashqai and it's getting some great reviews. The critics like the impressive fuel economy and the appeal of the substantial amount of torque on offer, but some were a bit disappointed by the relatively high asking price.
It may not be quite as powerful as the larger 2.0 oil burner, but the 1.6 diesel has the exact same 236lb/ft of torque on offer across a surprisingly wide power band, so there’s more than enough punch for most duties. It’s also much cheaper to run than the 2.0 dCi as well – Nissan claims up to 62 mpg is possible, and the 119g/km of CO2 output means it only costs £30 a year to tax.
The reviews say it's smooth, powerful and feels refined. It's easily fast enough for daily driving and doesn't lack in terms of acceleration.
Most of the experts reckon it's worth the extra £1-£1.5k over the 1.5 dCi, as this 1.6 dCi is not only more powerful, but also more economical. One review points out that unless you do a lot of mileage a year, then the 1.6 petrol would make more financial sense, as it's a lot cheaper to buy. If you're running a company car this is the best Qashqai to get.
Overall the 1.6 dCi is a very capable all-rounder, and possibly the best engine in the range, but there is a high price to pay.
It may be worth it if you can afford to spend the tall asking price, and it’s certainly one to look at if you’re a company car driver.
