Find out more about the Ford Mustang Convertible

Is the Ford Mustang Convertible a good car?

If you want a big, comfortable and stylish convertible, your choices are increasingly few - but Ford is looking to bolster your options with the new Mustang Convertible. The seventh-generation of Mustang, and only the second to be officially offered in the UK and in right-hand drive, this convertible model takes on the improvements common to the Mustang coupe but adds in a healthy dose of drop-top style.

The Mustang Convertible is like a house with a hot-tub - the fabric roof isn’t really the most practical or necessary addition, but for some it’ll be seen as indispensable.

Alternatives to the Mustang Convertible include the BMW 4 Series Convertible, or the upcoming Mercedes CLE Cabriolet - other convertibles on offer are either much smaller (Mazda MX-5) or vastly more expensive (Porsche 911 Cabriolet), leaving the Mustang in quite a strong position. If you’re fond of bold styling, the roar of a V8 engine and like getting plenty of bang for your buck, the Mustang Convertible could be the option for you when it launches later in 2024.

Two variants of the Mustang Convertible will be offered. The standard car is called the GT, and its 5.0-litre V8 pushes out a massive 446hp. Unlike the vast majority of cars on sale, the Mustang’s engine doesn’t have a turbocharger, and it’ll even be offered with a manual gearbox - a sweet combination for a certain kind of old-school motorist, though a ten-speed automatic is an option.

Those who want a bit of extra oomph can select the Mustang Dark Horse, which has some real performance modifications. The engine is tuned to produce 453hp, and the Performance Pack comes as standard - which brings a beefier cooling system, stickier tyres, bigger brakes and adjustable suspension. There’s also a limited-slip differential, which improves traction when you’re cornering.

The new Mustang Convertible looks like it'll be cracking value - especially considering that amazing 5.0-litre V8 under the bonnet

All of this adds up to the Mustang Dark Horse being focused at serious drivers - perhaps even those who want to take their cars on track. However, the convertible Mustang will be heavier and not quite as sharp as the coupe model in the corners, Dark Horse package or not.

The new Mustang’s styling is similar but updated from its predecessor, with a lower, sharper grille and slimmer headlights. A dramatic-looking pair of ‘nostril’ air intakes sit on top of the bonnet, and round the rear you still get either a ‘GT’ badge or simply the image of a prancing horse. Ferrari who?

Inside, it’s been given a 2024 makeover, with a pair of screens taking over the dashboard. There’s a 13.2-inch infotainment display that also houses most of the incidental controls, such as climate, and a 12.4-inch digital instrument panel. Both screens are angled for a driver-centric environment, and removing many of the physical buttons - though a divisive move - does free up more space for storage.

For those who think an American muscle car should be a bit of fun, the Mustang Convertible does come with a few extras. There’s a ‘Line Lock’ function that allows you to do huge, smokey burnouts, and even a ‘drift brake’ which lets you use the car’s electric handbrake to powerslide.

We’ll get behind the wheel of the new Ford Mustang soon, but in the meantime you can check out the best deals before the model's official release or browse used examples of the all-electric Mustang Mach-e on Carwow. We’ve also got great used deals on other Ford models, and remember that you can even sell your old car through Carwow’s network of trusted dealers.

How much is the Ford Mustang Convertible?

The Ford Mustang Convertible has a RRP range of £59,225 to £61,225. However, with Carwow you can save on average £975. Prices start at £58,267 if paying cash. Monthly payments start at £823.

Our most popular versions of the Ford Mustang Convertible are:

Model version Carwow price from
5.0 V8 GT 2dr Auto £60,233 Compare offers
5.0 V8 GT 2dr £58,267 Compare offers

At nearly £60,000, the Mustang isn’t cheap, but it still significantly undercuts any other convertible with comparable performance. While a BMW 420i Convertible is cheaper, that gets a rather less exciting four-cylinder engine, for example. The Dark Horse Edition is more similar in price to more zesty convertibles such as the Mercedes CLE 450 Cabriolet or BMW M440i Convertible, representing around a £10,000 boost over the GT.
