The Peugeot Traveller is a van-based MPV that is a godsend for large families – it can seat up to nine people (in XL form), but has running costs comparable to a regular car. It’s a rival for the Mercedes V-Class  and Hyundai i800.

Van-based underpinnings mean the Traveller is highly modular, meaning its length can go from 4.6 to 5.3 meters depending on which of the three versions you go for. As you can probably guess by the large, boxy exterior, passenger space is excellent and with all the rear seats removed the XL boasts a colossal luggage capacity of 4,900 litres.

Inside, there’s a van-like air to the materials, but the design and optional toys are reminiscent of what you’ll find in a Peugeot car. So buyers can spec a seven-inch infotainment screen with sat nav and there’s also the option to specify a head-up display that projects info – such as current speed – onto the windscreen.

Despite the tall body, driving the Traveller is easy – it has excellent manoeuvrability and a comfortable ride. Out on the motorway, though, the Peugeot’s brick-like aerodynamics mean it suffers from more wind noise than conventional, car-based rivals such as the Ford Galaxy.

In terms of engine choice it’s an all diesel affair. There are five to choose from ranging from 94 to 178hp and returning between 55 and 48mpg. CO2 emissions, meanwhile, vary from 133 to 151g/km, depending on engine size. The mid-spec Blue HDi 115 gets the best figures out of the bunch.

If you’re upgrading from a family hatchback, the standard equipment is decent, if not particularly generous for the price. You get cruise control, parking sensors and air-conditioning – radar-guided cruise control, automatic city braking and an 180-degree camera are notable options.
