  • Redesigned front bumper

It looks as though the BMW 3 Series will be refreshed in due course, with a fresh image of the updated car appearing on Instagram, uploaded by user @wilcoblok.

The current 3 Series has been around since 2018, though with the new Mercedes C-Class having just arrived it’s likely BMW is getting ready to give its 3 Series a few significant upgrades.

2023 BMW 3 Series facelift design

Perhaps surprisingly, this new BMW 3 Series doesn’t nab the large grille of the 4 Series — sticking with a smaller design that looks similar to the one on the new BMW 2 Series Coupe.

Other changes to the front include a new bumper design with a larger central air intake and redesigned vents below the headlights that may provide cooling for the front brakes.

The headlights lose the small indent of the current models, while the daytime running light strips stand out more and run along the top of the light cluster. The carbon-fibre-effect side mirrors and boot spoiler point to this being an M Sport model.

2023 BMW 3 Series facelift interior and infotainment

The cabin is likely to get the latest iDrive 8.0 infotainment system as used in the BMW i4 and iX all-electric models.

The new car will likely borrow infotainment tech from the i4, shown here…

This comprises a 14.9-inch central display and 12.3-inch driver’s display and should keep the 3 Series up to speed with newer offerings such as the latest Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

No word yet on what else will change inside the car, but some new upholstery and trim options are a safe bet.

2023 BMW 3 Series facelift engines and driving

A mid-life facelift for any BMW usually means that the engines get updated, and the new 3 Series is no expectation.

You can expect a return of the petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrids with slightly more power and possibly mild-hybrid assistance for the four-cylinder petrol units (the current range already offers mild-hybrid systems on the diesels and six-cylinder petrols).

Power outputs currently range from 184hp to 374hp – expect the new car to have a range of similarly powerful engines.

2023 BMW 3 Series facelift price and release date

Expect to see an official confirmation of the new BMW 3 Series early in 2022, with sales starting late in the year.

Pricing will likely be bumped slightly over the outgoing car — which can be had from £32,595 as a saloon or £34,430 for the ‘Touring’ estate.
