carwow's Best New Hatchback 2012 - The Audi A1 Sportback

best-hatchback

When Audi launched the three-door A1, it was inevitable a five-door variant would follow, and its proven immediately popular with the critics. Its as stylish as the three-door car but offers that extra dash of practicality to help you load friends or children into the back seats.
Once theyre in there, theyll find the same exceptional standards of quality as they would in any other Audi - the A1 Sportback goes straight to the top of the class in this regard. Its pleasing on both the fingers and the eyes, and with the extra doors some extra space has been liberated in the cabin, while the boot should handle shopping trips with ease.
Experts admit that the A1 isnt quite as sharp on the road as cars like the MINI or Citroen DS3, but those looking for a great all-rounder - and a vehicle that feels like a bigger car than it is - will find much to like. That includes agile handling, good refinement and enough legs for longer journeys. A mix of economical engines should draw in the buyers too, whether you prefer petrol or diesel. The 1.4 is even available with cylinder deactivation technology to improve economy - something normally seen on much bigger, more expensive cars.
Some may question the need to spend the extra over something like the Volkswagen Polo to benefit from the Audi badge, but in terms of quality and prestige you get what you pay for - and there are few more prestigious or high-quality cars available in this sector, making the A1 Sportbacks appeal plain to see.
