Nissan X-Trail towing weights guide

September 04, 2015 by

If you’re on the lookout for a mid-size SUV, chances are that the Nissan X-Trail will have caught your attention. It’s frugal, comfortable, and – unlike many of its closest rivals – can seat seven.

Many buyers will consider using the X-Trail as a tow car so we’ve taken a look at the features you’ll need to know before hitching up. Put the Nissan X-Trail in our car configurator to find out how much carwow could help you save.

Nissan X-Trail towing weights

Cars suited to towing tend to be quite heavy to balance the weight of a trailer. By seven-seat SUV standards, the X-Trail is quite light – weighing 1,580kg for the four-wheel drive, top-spec model. That’s still more than enough to cope with most trailers and the towing limits are competitive for the class – Nissan states that the X-Trail can tow a braked trailer up to 2,000kg, or a 750kg unbraked trailer.

These figures are quoted for the most powerful engine option in the range – a 130hp, 1.6-litre diesel. With 236lb ft of torque available from 1,750rpm, it’s the most suitable version for the job. Less powerful engines can only cope with a maximum of 1,500kg.

While a trailer won’t necessarily add much of a vertical load onto a tow bar, items like a bicycle rack will. In this instance, the X-trail’s hitching point can handle weights of up to 100kg.

What accessories are available?

There are a range of aftermarket towing options on sale, but Nissan offers its own selection of accessories. It often makes sense to buy straight from the manufacturer because these parts have been specifically designed to work with the X-Trail.

It costs £271 for a standard, fixed towbar. A removable option is also available, costing £394 and, whichever you choose, the price includes fitting at a Nissan dealer.
