2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 driven – UK review

October 13, 2020 by

The Chevrolet Corvette C8 is the latest, and potentially greatest, American muscle car to arrive in the UK. Mat’s driven this mid-engined Ferrari-baiter to give you his verdict.

There’s a reason that the Corvette C8 looks a little a Ferrari 360 – it’s the first Corvette to have its engine behind the driver in the middle of everything. Its lines are more angular than the Ferrari, though, with an aggressive, pinched front end rising to a chunky rear sporting four huge (and real) exhausts.

Down its sides, you’ll find two gaping air intakes, which again, are the real deal. It also has different sizes of alloy wheel, with 19s at the front and 20s at the back helping put its rear-drive power to the road more effectively.

We’re used to Corvettes being cheaper to buy than European alternatives, but that also meant putting up with a dodgy interior. Well, the Corvette is still far cheaper to buy in the US (not so much in the UK), but it now has a high-quality cabin that genuinely impresses.

The same goes for its infotainment system which is crisp, bright and easy to use. Of course, there’s only room for two people inside, but it’s a spacious interior, plus you get a front and rear boot helping you carry a surprising amount of luggage for those weekends away.

Now, Chevrolet says the C8 will do 0-60mph in 2.9 seconds. As hard as we tried, we couldn’t get near that – watch our full video review to see what we managed. Beyond that disappointment, the C8 is easily the best Corvette to drive there has ever been.

It’s comfy over bumps, grips extremely hard and feels agile on country roads with its engine now in the right place. The only downer is its numb steering. Still, you soon forget about that listening to that thumping naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8, which loves to rev and makes a staggering noise.

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray C8 verdict

A truly great sports car. In America? Buy this bargain straight away. In the UK? Its big price places it against some very healthy competition.
