The Paceman – MINI’s SUV Coupe

MINI today released this design concept for what they call a Sports Activity Coupe. Called the Paceman, its only a concept for now, but we expect itll soon go into production.

Clearly based on the the MINI Countryman (buzzScore 7.5), the Paceman loses the back set of doors in return for a sloping Coupe style roof.

The front of the Paceman is very similar to that of the Countryman, theyve only added a slightly contoured bonnet and deeper set fog lights.

From the side, the difference is clear, with what MINI call the helmet roof and coupe-style windows that taper towards the back.

At the back, the Paceman has the same huge MINI badge and similar sized large rear brake lights.

MINI have only released sketches of the interior so far, but again it looks to be almost identical to the Countryman, with 4 stand-alone chairs and a centre rail running down the middle.

Powering this concept car is the engine from the MINI Cooper S John Cooper Works, a 1.6 litre 211bhp unit. It also has the ALL4 system from the Countryman, which can send power to all four wheels when needed and sends 50% to the back wheels in normal driving conditions.

Its currently only a concept, no plans have been announced to start making it yet. However we would bet on them announcing a production version soon.

The Range Rover Evoque is soon to launch and so far has received very positive attention in the press, the Paceman is likely to be pitching at a slightly lower priced market to the Evoque. Another 4×4 Coupe is the BMW X6 (buzzScore 7.3), which has been surprisingly successful for BMW.

MINI have been slowly growing their range of models, its almost 10 years now since the first new Mini hatchback was launched. With the Countryman having been launched last year, and a MINI Coupe and Roadster already planned, it looks like the brand is now looking to rapidly expand their line-up.
