Caterham has become famous for its modern interpretation of the iconic Lotus Seven sports car. This utterly stripped-out machine is available either fully built, or if you prefer to get your hands dirty, as a kit. Once assembled, however, this race-bred two-seater has a dreamlike combination of high power and low weight that make it one of best driver’s cars on sale today.
The Seven range consists of a selection of engines, from a turbocharged three-cylinder Suzuki unit that produces a modest 80hp to a 2.0-litre Ford engine, capable of launching the diminutive Seven to 60mph from rest in under three seconds.
The Seven might be loud, uncomfortable, noisy and impractical, but for many drivers these compromises are a small price to pay for pure and unadulterated driving pleasure.
