Is the Mercedes E-Class Estate a good car?

The latest Mercedes E-Class saloon has been out for a little while now, launching in 2023 - but now it’s time for the estate model to take the stage. As with previous versions of E-Class estate, the focus is on having the biggest and most practical boot possible, wrapped up in a package only slightly less posh than Blenheim Palace.

This time though, it’s also absolutely loaded with technology - including some very sophisticated plug-in hybrid engines and the option of a full-width ‘Superscreen’ infotainment system that takes over almost the entire dashboard. So it’s a bit like a barn conversion with a hot-tub and movie room - a traditional shell, but with a modern heart.

The E-Class goes toe-to-toe with other premium estates, but with the Volvo V90 discontinued, the Audi A6 Avant getting on in years and the BMW 5 Series Touring on runout in preparation for a new model later this year, it rather has the market to itself for now.

On the outside, it’s totally revamped compared to its predecessor. You get a full-width front grille with a glitzy design and a black border, which can even be backlit if you want to stand out. The car’s silhouette is much sleeker than it was before, with a lower nose and a sloping roofline - but don’t be fooled. Thanks to an increase in length, there’s still a vast 615-litre boot - 70 litres more than an A6 Avant and 45 more than a 5-Series Touring.

However, the new VW Passat offers 690 litres, so the E-Class is no longer the carrying capacity champion it once was. And if you opt for a plug-in hybrid model, the boot shrinks to just 460 litres.

A big boot and efficient plug-in hybrid engine might make the Mercedes E-Class Estate really worth shortlisting

Inside, the E-Class has a wide, flat dashboard that looks pretty much featureless until you start the car. When you do, it’s dominated by a massive central touchscreen. There’s a separate display for driving information, and you can even specify a third display for the front passenger that makes up the seamless-looking ‘Superscreen’ system.

The passenger display can stream movies, play games, or control things like the stereo, and it’s clever enough to dim if the car’s eye-tracking software detects that the driver is getting distracted.

Engine choices include a basic 204hp petrol or a 197hp diesel - the petrol will be the cheapest way into E-Class Estate ownership, but the diesel will offer far superior fuel economy and is likely to be the pick of the range if you’re the sort of person who conquers mega mileages.

There’s also a plug-in hybrid E300e model, which uses a 2.0-litre petrol engine and an electric motor. Not only is it quicker than the regular petrol or diesel engines, it should be more efficient. A relatively large battery pack means it can do up to 70 miles on electricity alone, and in official tests it returned more than 300mpg.
