How do you get your kicks out on the road? Driving fast? The agile responses of a light-weight sports car? Or perhaps you like to waft from meeting to meeting in impenetrable serenity?

If you fit into the latter category, you may own, or have considered owning, a Mercedes-Benz E-Class at some point. If thats the case, then you might also be in the market for the new version.
Mercedes has revamped the whole E-Class range, from the subtle saloon and expansive estate, to the classy coupe and demure drop-top.
For the first time in a long while, Mercedes has ditched the twin-headlamp designs for a single-piece unit, signalling the models biggest visual change. Despite this, the new, all-LED clusters still imply separate lamp units, and as with any self-respecting exec chariot some distinctive LED strips define the shape of each light.
Elsewhere, redesigned bumpers, new tail-lights and a chrome-trimmed rear end complete the visual tweakery. On coupe and convertible models, the strong rear haunches and pillarless look are retained, as before.
The interior too features subtle updates on all the new E models. Wood or aluminium dashboard trims are available, while the instrument cluster sees an almost imperceptible redesign. On cabriolet models, interior comfort is enhanced by the now standard fitment of the AIRCAP system, which extends a small frame atop the windscreen surround to minimise the effects of turbulent air on the interior. AIRSCARF neck-level heating remains optional.
Engine-wise, ECO stop-start now features on every model, and new BlueDIRECT four-cylinder engines have joined the range.
Save for the saloon and estate-only E300 BlueTEC Hybrid, all E-Class shapes can be had as E200 and E250 petrols, or E220, E250 and E350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY diesels. Additionally, E-Class saloons and estates get an entry-level E200 CDI option.
All diesels break well beyond the 50 mpg barrier, while both petrols are capable of over 45 mpg, even in the estate. Better still, the four-cylinder petrols and six-cylinder E350 CDI diesel all meet 2015s new Euro 6 emissions standards, making them some of the cleanest cars on the roads.
The E-Class offers faintly ludicrous levels of safety in all its forms. Depending on the model and options, the new E-Class offers everything from lane-keeping assistance, active cruise control, automatic emergency braking up to 31mph, PRE-SAFE PLUS to help in rear-end collisions, adaptive lights, traffic sign assist really, we recommend you pick up a copy of the Es appropriately sturdy brochure and do some swatting-up.

Conclusion

Where BMW offers sports appeal, Audi sophisticated design and Jaguar a dash of good old-fashioned beauty, Mercedes has always been about tank-like construction and understated travel. The revised model is unlikely to change this, and with plenty of extra safety equipment, ever-more efficient engines and a visual freshen-up, itll deserve your money as much as it ever has – provided it suits your style.
