Skoda Octavia vRS diesel gets 4×4 option

Skoda has revealed it’ll now offer the speedy Octavia vRS with four-wheel drive and a DSG automatic gearbox to further expand its appeal
Skoda has announced that you can now buy the Octavia vRS diesel hot hatch with four-wheel drive and a six-speed DSG twin-clutch automatic gearbox. These additions allow better grip through corners, more traction when accelerating, enhanced all-weather ability and smoother, faster gearchanges.
When equipped with the new 4×4 drivetrain and automatic gearbox, the 181hp 2.0-litre turbodiesel completes the 0-62mph dash in 7.6 seconds – an improvement of 0.5 seconds over a standard two-wheel-drive diesel vRS – and can hit 142mph flat-out. Skoda claims the Octavia vRS 4×4 will get fuel economy of 57.6mpg and emits 129g/km of CO2.
Four-wheel drive is only offered with the DSG so, if you want the pleasure of changing your own gears, you’ll have to stick with two-wheel drive.
Who’s it aimed at?
The extra grip of the 4×4 system means that the vRS diesel will be perfect if you need to drive all-year round, and the diesel’s decent fuel economy means it’ll be cheap to run. It’ll be available in hatchback or estate forms too: the Octavia has a huge 610-litre boot if you plump for the estate version, so this looks like an eminently useful, sporty-but-practical car.
If you want the fastest Octavia, you’ll need to look to the vRS 230 which, with its 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, can hit 62mph from rest in just 6.7 seconds. The new four-wheel drive diesel might not be able to match the 230’s performance, but it also gets the same XDS+ torque vectoring front differential to pull the car through corners even more vigorously.
Skoda Octavia vRS 4×4 price and release date
The Octavia vRS diesel is on sale now costing from £27,315 for the hatchback and £28,515 for the Estate version. This represents a £1,450 increase over the two-wheel drive model.
