BMW M3 30 Jahre Edition: complete guide

The BMW M3 is celebrating its 30th birthday this year. Rather than singing songs and wearing shiny hats, the engineers at the BMW M Sport division have chosen to mark the occasion by producing this: the limited-run M3 30 Jahre Edition.

Just 30 examples of this ultimate M3 will be produced, ensuring it’ll be one of the rarest and most collectable performance BMWs ever made.

BMW M3 30 Jahre styling

From a distance the 30 Jahre looks instantly recognisable as an M3, but a few subtle tweaks ensure it appears just a little more special. Most obvious are the star-spoke alloy wheels, measuring 20 inches in diameter, and housing powerful carbon-ceramic brake discs.

Gorgeous bare carbon fibre weave is on show around the body, including on the front splitter, bumper trim, door mirror caps, roof, rear diffuser and rear spoiler. Each 30 Jahre will be finished in Frozen Silver paint, a shade taken from BMW’s Individual range.

BMW M3 30 Jahre interior

Inside, the M3 30 Jahre gains sports front seats trimmed in blue and black leather, while the seatbelts and steering wheel feature stitching in the familiar blue, violet and red of BMW M Sport. The wheel and the gear selector are trimmed in alcantara, a material used in racing car interiors thanks to its grippy texture and glare-reducing surface. A 16-speaker harman/kardon sound system keeps occupants entertained, and a head-up display helps the driver stay focussed on the road.

BMW M3 30 Jahre driving and engines

Under the bonnet, the 30 Jahre shares the engine upgrades found in the M3 Competition Pack. That means a revised exhaust system, among other tweaks, helps to free up an extra 19 horsepower from the M3’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo engine for a total of 444hp. Combined with a standard-fit seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, the 0-62mph time is despatched in four seconds flat – one tenth of a second quicker than a regular M3.

Suspension revisions also mirror those of the Competition Pack, so the ride is firmer, the stability control system relaxed, and the Comfort, Sport and Sport+ drive modes have all been fettled in order to make the most of the changes to the hardware.

BMW M3 30 Jahre prices

The extra performance, exclusivity and equipment of the M3 Jahre comes at a price, though: at £82,675, it’ll cost a whopping £26,085 more than a regular M3.

BMW M3 30 Jahre release date

The sales for the 30 Jahre will begin this summer, precisely 30 years after the first customer order for an M3 was placed in 1986.
