Dacia Duster Gets Expensive (Relatively) With New Black Edition

The joy of Dacia's vehicles being so cheap is twofold.

On the one hand, they provide unparalleled entry into the new car market - nowhere else can you find a Fiesta-sized car for 5,995 as you can with the Sandero, and nowhere can you step up into a crossover for 8,995, as evidenced by the Duster. Often, you need double that.

On the other, the mere pocket change needed for the cheapest models means even fully-loaded versions still look remarkably affordable. And so it is with the Dacia Duster Black Edition.

Dacia Duster Black rear

Yes, 17,575 looks a little chunky next to the headline-grabbing Access model. But that's only because the Access is so cheap.

In reality, it's less than 1,000 more than you'd pay for an entry-level Nissan Qashqai or MINI Countryman. It's within a few hundred quid of a Hyundai ix35 or Kia Sportage. It is just possible to get yourself into the (admittedly excellent) Skoda Yeti Greenline for that sort of money.

Dacia Duster Black interior

While the Duster Ambience Black Edition lacks all-wheel drive, so do all its rivals at that price. Nor do they have the brushed black vinyl wrap of the Duster, nor the matching leather interior, Kenwood media system with 6-inch touchscreen and Garmin sat-nav, or 18-inch alloy wheels.

They probably weren't built due to overwhelming interest at a motor sport event like the Goodwood Festival of Speed either, like the Duster is.

Dacia Duster Black side

It's hard to look at the Duster, even one as loaded-up as the Black Edition, and see anything but a fantastic value crossover. While it verges perilously close to the tarty (18-inch alloys and a matte black wrap... c'mon guys...) we'd not be surprised to see plenty of them hitting the streets, simply for that price and equipment trade-off.

Our own Duster of choice is still the Access model for its down-to-earth honesty - though we wouldn't mind the Black Edition's light bar on the roof rack - but it isn't hard to see the appeal of the Black when the alternative is a bottom-end rival...
