From Cape Town To London In A Fiat Panda TwinAir

One very small car recently set off on a very long journey - arriving safely, and breaking a world record in the process.

Adventurers Philip Young and Paul Brace took a Fiat Panda from Cape Town in South Africa to London, in only 10 days, 13 hours and 28 minutes.

The duo broke the previous record by more than a day, despite casting aside the use of a large 4x4 for the Panda TwinAir - Fiat's twin-cylinder, 900cc supermini.

With only minimal modifications, mainly to improve comfort and durability over the epic 10,300-mile route, the pair and their Panda had to average 1,000 miles a day at 40 mph through desert tracks, pot-holed roads and politically unstable countries - yet the car never missed a beat.

Modifications made to the Panda, chosen for its lightness, performance and fuel economy, included an extra fuel tank, two spare wheels, sump guards, stronger springs and a raised air intake for river crossings.

That's more than you'll find on a standard Panda TwinAir, but then your road-going Panda has probably never been to Egypt, the Sudan or Kenya, among others.

And besides those durability-focused changes, the Panda was otherwise standard - the same 84 horsepower, the same 67.3 mpg official rating, and the same 99 grams per kilometer of CO2 - the trip was certainly greener than the average 4x4 explorations!

It has been a remarkable time on the road exciting and exhilarating and the Fiat Panda was amazing, enthused Philip Young.

The roads were treacherous, the heat unbearable and the timetable exhausting, but the car never missed a beat. This was an extremely tough journey, and Fiat can be proud of its reliability and ruggedness.

Of course, the trip wasn't just about adventuring, and the duo's completed trip will raise money for the charity Farm Africa, which helps African smallholding farmers grow themselves out of poverty.
