Jaguars popular XF range has been extended with the addition of a detuned 163PS (161bhp) version of their 2.2-litre diesel engine that is capable of up to 52.3mpg and costs 1000 less than the more powerful 187bhp version.
Its no poverty-spec special though and still includes the half-leather seats, touch screen display, climate control and eight-speed gearbox of the SE-model.
Proving the adage that you get nothing for nothing in this world the new model is brisk rather than fast. Its top speed of 130mph is respectable but the 62mph sprint takes a hefty 9.8 seconds.
However all of that is just tinkering around the edges; the big news is that the new XF will be fitted with automatic Stop-Start to lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, which are now 52.3mpg and 149g/km respectively.
Despite all of this its still not as green as some of its rivals including the outstandingBMW 520d ED.
The new model is 1,000 cheaper than its more powerful sibling and costs 29,950 OTR.Dealers are taking orders now and the first deliveries will be made in March.
The changes havent made a difference to the XFs fuel consumption and have blunted the performance considerably; our advice is to pay the small premium for the more powerful 2.2-litre diesel engine for the time being as its a lot nicer to drive and no thirstier.
