Jaguar has made waves in the automotive industry by announcing its first production SUV – the F-Pace – by revealing the official image above.
Many pundits have suggested it could step on the toes of various Land Rover models – not least, the new Discovery Sport – but Jaguar says there’s enough difference between the two cars and enough demand for its model, shown in concept form in the photos below.
The new SUV will offer class leading interior space and has been tuned for ‘exceptional’ on-road handling. Using Jaguar’s aluminium chassis technology and suspension components from the F-Type and XE means the car should be a fair bit lighter than some rivals – this benefits handling, fuel consumption and acceleration.
Under the skin will sit a four-wheel drive system optimised for on-road use which employs Jaguar’s new All-Surface Progress Control – an advanced traction and stability control program – to ensure you have the grip you need. Jaguar’s latest range of Ingenium four-cylinder engines will feature along with V6s borrowed from the F-Type.
Where Land Rover prides itself on its off-roading heritage and the toughness of its vehicles, Jaguar is telling customers its new model is a ‘family sports car’. In essence, a road car that’s been lifted and enlarged to fit all the paraphernalia a modern family needs to cart around with it.
The announcement comes as the marque celebrates its 80th year and comes on the back of a bumper year for the UK auto industry with new car registrations on an upward trend for the past ten years. Jaguar says the new model will bring 1,300 new jobs to its Solihull production centre in the West Midlands.
Engineering and development will now hone the car in time for its 2016 launch. If you can’t wait that long for a luxury SUV why not take a look at the new Land Rover Discovery Sport or Porsche Macan – two cars the F-Pace will have to beat if it wants the SUV crown.
