The new Mercedes C-Class broke cover a couple of months ago, but at that time the range and pricing structure for the UK market was still under wraps. With a June launch date approaching most rapidly, these details have been revealed.
What powers it?
At launch there’s a choice of two engines. The C200 model is pulled along by a 2.0 litre petrol engine producing 184hp and 221lbfft. This will throw you to 60mph in 7.5s and return around 53.3mpg (123g/km), costing 105 a year in vehicle excise duty – though your first year will be free.
There’s also a diesel option, in the C220 BlueTEC. This is a 2.1 litre turbo unit good for 170hp and 295lbfft – making it only 0.2s slower to 60mph, but managing 70.6mpg. With 103g/km CO2, it sits in VED band B, for a 20 annual ticket.
Each will be available mated to a six speed manual or seven speed G-Tronic Plus automatic.
Following on after launch will be two more diesels – C200 BlueTEC and C250 BlueTEC – with a diesel-electric hybrid C300 to complete the set. Further petrol models have been mooted and it’s probable there will be spicy models – not to mention AMG-fiddled Q cars – later down the line.
What trim levels are there?
The C-Class will fit into existing trim-naming schemes, with SE forming the entry car, Sport as the next level up and the AMG Line offering the most toys.
Entry level it may be, but the SE is far from spartan. Standard equipment across the range includes dual zone airconditioning, a reversing camera, cruise control, heated windscreen washers (and rain-sensing wipers), tyre pressure monitors and a bunch of driver aids pulled down from the S-Class where they’ve only just debuted – including attention assist and collision prevention assist.
There’s also a standard 7 colour display, controlled by touchpad, and an agility select system that allows you to alter the car’s behaviour for comfortable, economical or sporty driving – there’s even a user-defined set-up in case the preset ones don’t quite do it for you. All C-Classes come with Artico – a leather substitute – upholstery as standard too.
Upgrading to Sport adds LED headlights, lowered comfort suspension, 17 alloy wheels and a Garmin-based navigation system, while AMG Line models get exclusive 18 AMG wheels, AMG body styling and steering wheel and sport suspension.
Options packs include the Executive Pack for the SE, adding the navigation system with heated front seats and split folding rear seats. Sport and AMG Line owners can opt for the Driving Assistance Package to include the Distronic Plus quasi-driverless system, Blind Spot Assist, Lane-Keeping Assist. Other packs will add a panoramic sunroof, memory seats, a heads-up display, a 590W Burmester surround sound system or a 360 degree camera.
How much will it cost me?
To go for the base petrol engined SE model with no options and the manual gearbox will set you back 26,855. The diesel engine is a 2,510 increase on any model, while the automatic gearbox is a 1,500 option. Moving from SE to Sport will cost 1,995, while AMG Line is another 3,490 atop the cost of the Sport – so the launch range will top out at the 34,355 AMG Line diesel automatic.
Of the option packs mentioned above, the Executive Pack will cost SE buyers 995, with theDriving Assistance Package putting another 1,495 on Sport and AMG Line buyers’ budgets. The Premium Pack featuring that panoramic sunroof – along with memory front seats, keyless and powered boot operation and three colour ambient lighting – is 1,595 and available only on Sport and AMG Line. Another 1,200 gets the Premium Plus Pack, with all of the Premium Pack features and that surround sound system, with Mercedes’ COMAND online features.
Although the order books are not yet officially open, the C-Class is set to commence first customer deliveries in June 2014.
