New Jaguar XF Promises 57.7 MPG And 129g/km CO2

Jaguar has released details of the new 2014 XF, which includes the launch of a new four-cylinder, 2.2-litre diesel engine. This has the potential to slash the cost of running an XF saloon or Sportbrake.

The 163PS ECO2 engine promises to deliver 57.7mpg on a combined cycle, plus CO2 emissions of just 129g/km. Even taking into account the difference between ‘claimed’ and ‘real world’ fuel economy figures, this could turn out to be a pretty frugal big cat.

Such impressive figures are made possible by Jaguar’s Stop-Start system and an eight-speed gearbox.

Other tweaks include – and here comes the science bit – new larger exhaust gas recirculation valves and a revised cooling assembly. It all helps to bring the CO2 figure down by 6g/km compared to the outgoing equivalent.

But the new XF isn’t just about economy and efficiency. The 2014 model year XF also sees the introduction of an extended navigation system, which is said to feature improved mapping and iGO primo, which adds a range of search options, a smart keyboard and one-way road visualisation.

The range of exterior paint colours will also be revised, with Osmium replacing Crystal Blue and Dark Sapphire replacing Indigo Blue.

2014 Jaguar XF

It’s all too easy to get excited about big engines and supreme quality with a new Jaguar, but in the case of the new 2.2-litre diesel XF, it’s all about something Jaguar doesn’t give you. And that’s big running costs.

To think that you can buy a new Jaguar that will reach 62mph in 9.8 seconds, go on to a top speed of 130mph and deliver 400Nm of torque and yet, doesn’t cost a penny to tax in the first year. And even in year two, it will only cost 105 to tax – this big Jag will shame some small hatches.

Prices are yet to be announced, but for company car drivers, the Jaguar XF 2.2-litre diesel may just have risen to the top of the shopping list.
