Peugeot 2008 – French Juke Rival Set For May Debut

Peugeot has taken the opportunity at Geneva to show off a new small crossover by the name of 2008.

The 2008 borrows the naming tradition of the 3008 and Peugeot 5008 – crossovers and multi-purpose vehicles of similar size to the more conventional vehicles in the segment.

As you can guess then, the 2008 is based on the same small car platform as the 208 hatch. It’s a foray into the hot selling B-segment “mini crossover” market densely populated by the Nissan Juke, MINI Countryman and the upcoming Ford EcoSport and Renault Captur.

Running largely the same range of petrol and diesel engines as the similarly styled hatch, the 2008 should return up to 62mpg (or 98g/km CO2) from the most frugal models – the extra bulk blunting the economy a little but still returning class-leading figures.

The cabin is aircraft inspired, with a cockpit style binnacle and satin chrome finish in all the frequently stroked places. Much of it will be familiar to 208 drivers, with the same raised instruments, small, low-set steering wheel, and central touch-screen display.

Despite having the same wheelbase as the hatch, the 2008 will take 360 litres of luggage, rising to a useful 1,194 litres with the rear seats down.

It’s also loaded with safety kit, boasting ESP with Anti-Skid Regulation, Stability Control, Emergency Braking Assistance and Electronic Brake Force Distribution, along with Peugeot’s adaptive “Grip Control” system to boost front wheel traction on differing terrains.

The order books open for the 2008 in May 2013 with deliveries due later in the summer. Prices have yet to be announced, but customers should expect a 10-15% premium over the 208 hatch model.

Conclusion

Nissan’s unusually-styled Juke has sold like warm confectionary products since its introduction a few years ago, and MINI hasn’t done badly with the Countryman either. For Peugeot, this is an appealing segment, and the neatly-styled 2008 could find itself taking a slice of that popularity.
