Peugeot 208 Hybrid FE Concept - Details of 140 MPG Supermini

Peugeot already packs quite a hybrid punch in its range. The diesel-electric HYbrid4 powertrain it developed sits underneath versions of the 3008, 508 and 508RXH and it has even put a hybrid compressed air engine in a 2008.

With the two powertrains achieving 88g/km and 69g/km respectively, this already helps Peugeot towards low fleet targets for carbon dioxide emissions in accordance with European directives.

The 208 HYbrid FE is something of a new approach, in the shape of a petrol hybrid. It uses a 68hp 3 cylinder 1.2 litre petrol engine running on an unusual combustion cycle mated to a battery pack from - of all things - Peugeot's 908 Le Mans racer.

But the pursuit of low emissions doesn't merely finish at the powertrain. Peugeot has also given the 208 a severe diet, stripping 20% of the weight from the car - which barely broke a tonne as it was.

Low weight engine and suspension components are backed up with extensive use of carbon fibre, composites, glass fibre, polypropylene and polycarbonate. The car uses low rolling resistance 19" wheels that, along with the weight reduction, mean power assisted steering is unnecessary and deleted from the car - saving yet more weight and reducing power loads on the engine.

The final piece of the fuel economy puzzle is aerodynamic drag and the 208 has been restyled to suit. Reducing the drag coefficient by 25% to 0.25 helps it slice through the air with less effort, requiring less power and less fuel in the process.

Perhaps the most noticeable change is the deletion of the wing mirrors, replaced with rear-facing cameras. This in particular will have a tremendous effect, but a number of other subtle tweaks to the metal play their part too - even the headlights have thin vertical fins (a feature seen on Peugeot's Onyx concept car) to redirect airflow efficiently.

The 208 HYbrid FE returns on-paper figures of 49g/km on the combined cycle (equivalent to around 140mpg) and will be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in two weeks.
