You can almost hear the sigh of relief from hot hatchback fans.
As companies take a long, hard look at their product lines and decide three-door cars aren’t worth it, sporty performance cars like the Ford Focus ST and the next Renaultsport Clio are five-door only.
Not for SEAT such paucity of choice. Just as we thought the Spanish brand was losing its mojo with tedious vehicles like the Toledo, it announces the Leon Sports Coup, launching at the Geneva Motor Show next month.
The Leon has always been an attractive car, but it’s always offered only five doors, too.
We now know what we’ve been missing, thanks to the SC’s taut lines and smooth, sculptured flanks. It’s quite the looker, not dissimilar from the smaller Ibiza SC, but more grown-up.
It’s no simple styling job, either. Volkswagen’s adaptable MQB platform has allowed SEAT to shrink the wheelbase by 35 mm, to the benefit of agility. Despite this, rear headroom and boot space are unaffected.
Under the bonnet you’ll find the typical lineup of Volkswagen-sourced motors, from a 104-horsepower 1.2 TSI at the budget end and a 138-horsepower 1.4 TSI, to two diesels of 1.6 and 2.0-litres in capacity. The former is capable of up to 74.3 mpg and grants you free road tax, so stylish looks don’t come at the expense of thrift.
Topping the engine range is a 177-horsepower 1.8 TSI, which should keep performance fans happy until the inevitable barrage of bright yellow Cupra and Cupra R models arrive. Five and six speed manuals are standard, with six- or seven-speed dual-clutch transmissions an option, depending on the model.
