Sporty cars with particularly unsporty engines might seem pointless to some, but there’s a whole market full of people after just such a car.
They’re called “young people”, and rising insurance rates and petrol costs make running a car pretty difficult for the average yoof these days.
Those who do drive want something smart to go with their fruit-themed smartphones, but suitably cheap to run. Step forward, the Skoda Citigo Sport.
Funky styling and go-faster stripes hide nothing more potent than the Citigo’s base-level 1.0-litre engine. With 60 PS it’s not so much fire-breathing as water-gargling, but its 62.8 mpg combined economy is much more important.
So too is its low 105 g/km CO2 output, for a road tax bill less than the price of a round at the student’s union.
Sporting attributes include a set of racy 15-inch ‘Auriga’ alloy wheels, front fog lights, tinted windows and 15mm-lowered sport suspension. Front and rear spoilers, a rear diffusor and some racing stripes complete the look. These contrast with the three available body colours – Candy White, Tornado Red and Deep Black.
The Citigo’s cabin hasn’t escaped the hand of sportiness either, with black and red sport seats, a leather-wrapped three-spoke sport steering wheel, a two-tone dash, and a leather handbrake and gearstick gaiter.
Skoda’s dashboard-mounted ‘Personal Infotainment Device’ is standard, including satellite navigation, Bluetooth compatibility, and vehicle and trip info. Four extra speakers help pump out the tunes.
The Sport can be had as a three or five-door hatchback, at 10,290 or 10,640.
