Oh, how they laughed when Skoda announced a car called the Superb. Hee hee, haa haa.
Skoda jokes are as popular as leg warmers these days but you’re inviting criticism with a name like Superb. So how those laughs turned to quizzical expressions when everyone discovered the Superb was actually pretty damn good.
It got even better in its second generation, now updated with the brand’s new family face and priced from a perfectly reasonable 18,555.
On sale in July, that sum will get you a Superb hatchback with a 125 PS 1.4-litre engine under the bonnet, in S trim. An equivalent estate starts at 19,680, both comfortably over 500 cheaper than their predecessors.
In fact, the new Superb has seen prices fall across the board.
The 109 g/km Greenline II, with its low 16 percent Benefit In Kind (BIK) rate, is 815 cheaper than before at 20,070 in S trim. The popular 2.0 TDI kicks off at 20,360 – a 900 saving – and a DSG dual-clutch gearbox bumps that up to 21,795. Estates are in the region of 1,150 extra model-for-model.
SE models begin at 21,595 with a 1.8 TSI 160 PS engine, Elegance models start at 25,615 with the same unit, and the range climbs all the way to the deceptively fast 260 PS 3.2-litre V6 model in luxury Laurin Klement trim, with a far-from-deceptive 32,500 price tag.
You’ll need deep pockets to run it though, with CO2 emissions of 215 g/km and an eye-watering 35 percent BIK rate…

The Superb is a highly underrated vehicle, a luxury vehicle in disguise. It’s also cheaper than before and many models offer better fuel economy than they did pre-facelift. If you’re a fan of the brand but the new Octavia doesn’t quite offer the space and comfort you’re looking for, the Superb could be the model to go for.
