MINI have just released the first official details and photos of the MINI Coupe. Its a two seater thatll be the fastest and sportiest car in the MINI range.
MINI claim that this Coupe will be very focused on performance and driver enjoyment. The chassis, weight distribution and engine choices are all selected to maximise its sporty feel. The press release even goes as far to use the old cliche The ultimate in go-kart feeling.
The photos show an early development car, hence the funny paint job. Its only a two seater car, which will limit the appeal to many buyers. Though MINI say that the boot will be practical, with a large luggage area and big opening.
The flagship variant from launch will be the John Cooper Works Coupe, with a 1.6 turbocharged petrol engine giving 211hp and 0-60 in 6.4 seconds. The slightly toned down Cooper S version will have the same engine, but tuned to 184hp, giving a marginally slower 0-60 of 6.9 seconds.
The Cooper will be the more fuel efficient petrol choice, with 122hp, 0-60 in 9 seconds and 52.3 mpg. Finally, the only diesel will be the Cooper SD, key stats are 143hp, 7.9 seconds and 65.7 mpg.
No word yet on the pricing, though wed expect it to be similar to the hatchback.
A lot is going to come down to just how fun the MINI Coupe is to drive. Chances are, for that aspect, its going to get a lot of praise. The hatchback versions are really enjoyable and we already know these engines are good.
However, its likely to be a fairly niche car, its a lot less practical that the hatchback simply by having two less seats. Its an odd looking car too, though were sure itll look a little better when properly revealed.
Based on these early photos and information, wed likely choose a MINI hatchback over it, simply for the extra practicality, its already good to drive and we prefer the looks.
