Volvo V40 Gets Cheaper And More Frugal With T2, D2 Models

Volvo's V40 is a bit of a carwow favourite, even giving it full marks on our first test. It looks great, has some excellent features and drives well - and now there are two more options to make it even more appealing.

The first new model is an updated D2 diesel, with reduced emissions and a new automatic gearbox option. The 1.6-litre diesel may not be sporty, but economy is now as high as 83.1 mpg in the D2 manual.

That's an improvement of 4.6 mpg over the previous car, and results in CO2 emissions of only 88 g/km - comfortably sitting in band A for road tax.

Even the Cross Country model with its more rugged styling still sneaks in to band A, with CO2 of 99 g/km and combined fuel consumption of 74.3 mpg.

The new automatic models don't quite sneak into the tax-free emissions group, but combined economy of 72.4 mpg in standard and R-Design versions and 68.9 mpg for the Cross Country, you'll still be a stranger at your local petrol station.

Diesel not your thing? A new 120 bhp version of the T2 model could be just the ticket. The 1.6-litre unit also produces 177 pounds-feet of torque, and achieves 53.3 mpg on the combined economy cycle. 124 grams of CO2 lands it in VED band D, for a bill of 100 per year.

A new option also joins the practical V40 range - Sensus Connected Touch. The internet-enabled infotainment system has a 7-inch touchscreen that can be used while wearing gloves, but also features voice activation for Spotify internet radio and other devices connected to the system. Google maps, 3D navigation and WiFi are all part of the package.

Conclusion

The talented V40 range just keeps getting better - we can't see too many complaints about a more affordable model in the T2 (full pricing will be announced in April) and increased economy for the D2 versions. Throw in the new infotainment system and our original 10/10 score won't be budging any time soon...
