With the recent release of the Audi Q2, the brand announced its arrival into the popular compact crossover segment. Hot on the heels of the regular model will be a performance variant called the SQ2, promising straight-line speed to compete with some of the most potent hot hatches on the market. Here’s what we know so far…
New Audi SQ2 styling
Spy shots courtesy of motorionline show the SQ2 almost entirely undisguised. The Q2’s somewhat quirky styling will draw inspiration from other fast Audis, including the S3 and SQ7, when it gets transferred to the SQ2. We expect it to look subtly tougher than the regular model courtesy of bigger front air intakes, larger alloy wheels, silver-capped door mirrors and a pair of twin exhausts poking out from under the rear bumper.
New Audi SQ2 interior
Like the regular Q2, the SQ2 will share its basic cabin design with the A3. The SQ2, therefore, should look near identical to the S3. Sports seats, a flat-bottomed leather steering wheel with contrasting stitching and aluminium-faced pedals are all likely to appear. Like the rest of the Q2 lineup, the Virtual Cockpit system is likely to be an optional extra that’s well worth investing in.
New Audi SQ2 driving and engines
The SQ2’s engine is likely to be shared with – yep, you guessed it – the S3. That means it’ll pack a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit good for 306hp. Paired with Audi’s quattro four-wheel-drive system and a DSG automatic gearbox, the benchmark 0-62mph sprint should be covered in around five seconds – comfortably quicker than current performance crossovers, the Nissan Juke Nismo RS and Mini Countryman JCW.
New Audi SQ2 price and release date
Prices for the SQ2 – or, indeed, regular Q2 models – have yet to be confirmed. Our best guess puts the Q2 range priced similarly to the A3 hatchback, so we’d expect the SQ2 to cost somewhere in the region of £31,000-£33,000.
