2018 Bentley Continental GT price, specs and release date

Bentley is working on a replacement for its popular Continental GT. The current car went on sale in 2011 and rivals models from Aston Martin and Mercedes. The new car will take centre stage in a reinvigorated Bentley lineup that aims to propel the Crewe-based manufacturer to sales of more than 20,000 models a year. Here’s what we know so far…

Don’t want to wait for the new one? Dealers will offer progressively bigger savings as the outgoing model approaches the end of its life so spec up a Bentley Continental GT to see how much you could save. The styling is expected to borrow from the EXP 10 Speed Six concept

2018 Bentley Continental GT styling

The new Continental GT is expected to remain relatively evolutionary in terms of styling, and spy shots courtesy of AutoGuide suggest the dimensions will remain about the same, though front and rear overhangs do appear shorter meaning an increased wheelbase for more cabin space. The front will feature a traditional bluff Bentley grille, with dramatic headlights similar to the ones used in the new Bentayga SUV.

Overall styling is expected to echo the EXP 10 Speed Six concept (above) that was shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2015, but Bentley is also rumoured to be launching an additional smaller, sportier model based on that particular concept. This means it’s likely to introduce some key changes to allow for differentiation between models.

The cabin could be inspired by the Bentayga’s (shown)

2018 Bentley Continental GT interior

Few details have emerged about the new Continental GT’s interior, but we’d expect it to continue the Bentley tradition of using top-notch materials and having a luxurious feel. The Bentayga probably showcases much of the new car’s interior styling, but Bentley might add even more technology such as its own version of Audi’s virtual cockpit to future-proof the design. Naturally, a slick infotainment system and Apple CarPlay will also feature.

In terms of space, the traditional 2+2 layout should remain intact, with plenty of space for two to travel in comfort or four at a pinch, even on continent-crossing trips. The longer wheelbase of the new car should improve this even more, and could even free up more luggage space over the old model – not that it was lacking in that department.

Performance should be smile-inducing to say the least

2018 Bentley Continental GT driving and engines

Bentley is basing its new Continental GT on the upcoming MSB platform that will be used throughout Volkswagen Group products, including the next Porsche Panamera. This means you can expect the excellent refinement and comfort of the current car to be carried through, although the heavy use of aluminium in construction should make the new model much lighter than previous generations aiding performance and efficiency.

The engine lineup is expected to carry over. Bentley launched an updated 6.0-litre W12 engine in the Bentayga and this will probably be the flagship engine in the new Contintental GT. It’ll probably produce more than 600hp and should give devastating performance with reduced fuel economy compared to the current version. There should also be an updated version of the current turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine, possibly followed by a plug-in hybrid capable of producing more than 400hp while using very little fuel.

2018 Bentley Continental GT price

It seems unlikely that Bentley will charge anything less than £150,000 for the new Continental GT – a figure that represents a relatively small increase over the current model. That said, most Bentleys don’t leave the showroom without options costing many thousands of pounds so the W12 version could end up costing upwards of £200,000.

2018 Bentley Continental GT release date

All signs point to the new Bentley Continental GT going on sale in 2018, though it could be revealed at some stage in 2017. The fact the test mules spotted seem to be quite close to production might suggest an earlier launch, but Bentley will be keen not to rush what has traditionally been its biggest selling model.
