Kia has released the first details for its upcoming Niro hybrid model. Little is known about the new crossover, but these images reveal a sleek design that borrows much from the new Sportage revealed at the end of 2015.
The Niro will be Kia’s first hybrid in the UK and will probably share some parts with the new Hyundai Ioniq – considering Hyundai and Kia co-develop much of their technology. Kia’s decision to build its new hybrid as a crossover could bring in buyers from compact crossovers in addition to those who’d normally buy a Toyota Prius.
It’s not currently known whether the Niro will be available just as a traditional hybrid, or whether there will also be a plug-in variant. Kia has targeted CO2 emissions of less than 90g/km – giving a potential fuel economy figure of around 80mpg in mixed driving conditions.
Kia already has a strong crossover range in the UK – the Sportage and Sorento are popular with buyers but neither comes in an especially efficient guise. The Niro will be hoping to tempt buyers away from the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
More details about the Kia Niro will be released when the car is officially revealed at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show in February. Prices are currently unknown, but we don’t expect it to cost much more than the Sportage when it goes on sale later in 2016.
