Mazda has released a teaser pic of the 2019 Mazda 3 which confirms the car will be offered, as before, as a conventional hatchback and as a fastback with a larger boot. The car will be unveiled on 28 November at the the LA Motor Show. Keep reading for the car’s price, specs and release date.
As is the way with these things, the latest press release from Mazda doesn’t tell us much, but the picture does reveal that the back of the 2019 Mazda 3 remains remarkably faithful to the Mazda 3 Kai concept (below) that was shown at the Tokyo motor show in 2017.
You get the same teardrop rear window glass and the same kink in the trim that surrounds it, although you’ll now see chrome where you used to see black plastic. The sloping roofline of the concept car isn’t as raked as it once was – that will have made way for more rear headroom – and the tiny piercing tail lights have been replaced with more practical items. Ones you’ll actually see at night. All that comes under the ethos of ‘Kodo design philosophy’ that ’embodies the essence of Japanese aesthetics’, of course.
Underneath the body, meanwhile, the car will use the latest generation of SkyActiv vehicle architecture and engines. Keep reading to find out exactly what that’ll mean to you and for all the info on the car’s price, specs and release date.
2019 Mazda 3 price and release date
The new Mazda 3 isn’t likely to set you back much more than the current model that retails for £18,000 for a basic hatchback and £20,000 for the larger Mazda 3 Fastback. The covers will be pulled off the car at the LA Motor Show on 28 November and it is expected to go on sale in early 2019.
2019 Mazda 3 specs
The new 2019 Mazda 3 will gain plenty of tech, most notably an enormous, possibly full-width infotainment screen, leaving very few buttons on the centre console. The whole car will get a more premium feel to compete with the likes of the Audi A3 and Mercedes A-Class, so expect plenty of leather and soft-touch plastics to go with streaks of metal trim throughout the cabin.
The driving position will be lowered to help give a sporty feel, and overall cabin space improved to help the 2019 Mazda 3 offer more rear legroom and a bigger boot than the outgoing car to rival the 380-litres in the Volkswagen Golf.
The 2019 Mazda 3 will go on sale in 2019, featuring a new type of engine that could mean the spell the end of Mazda diesels.
The SkyActiv-X petrol engine in the new 2019 Mazda 3 will achieve diesel-like MPG figures thanks to what it calls Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SCCI). It allows the engine to work in two ways – the spark plugs can operate like in any traditional petrol engine to burn the fuel, or the engine can quietly switch over to diesel-style compression ignition (where pressure, rather than spark plugs causes the fuel to burn) to improve efficiency.
This clever new tech, combined with a conservative 187hp and 230nm of torque, will mean the supercharged 2.0-litre engine will be as efficient as a diesel, but without the sooty emissions. Also available from launch will be two cheaper and smaller petrol and diesel engines, carried over from the outgoing model.
