The Mazda MX-5 is a fast and frugal sports car that combines everyday usability with driving fun. For those looking for a little more power, tuning firm BBR has now released performance upgrades for both the engine and chassis.
The Mazda goes into battle against many more powerful and expensive convertibles – read our article on the UK’s cheapest convertible sports cars for full details – but do these BBR upgrades help it compete with offerings from BMW, Audi and Mercedes?

New Mazda MX-5 BBR engine upgrades
The new BBR upgrades come in the form of ‘Super 160′, ‘Super 175+’ and ‘Super 190′ levels, referring to the projected horsepower the modifications release from the Mazda 1.5 and 2.0-litre engines. These packages are priced at £495 for the Super 160 and 175+ and £1995 for the Super 190.
Both engines receives re-mapped engine software and optimised ignition and fuelling systems along with a modified camshaft. In Super 160 trim, the 1.5-litre engine produces 20hp and 15lb ft of torque more than the standard car and the Super 175+ equipped 2.0-litre unit now offers an additional 17hp and 10lb ft of torque.
The Super 190 upgrade bumps up the output of the 2.0-litre engine by 30hp and 24lb ft of torque thanks to a new cold air intake system, sports catalytic converter and a completely new stainless steel exhaust system. Where some engine modifications produce high power at the expense of drivability, BBR has worked hard to ensure the MX-5 remains as easy to drive as when it left the factory.
New Mazda MX-5 BBR suspension and brake upgrades
BBR has developed it’s own sports springs for the MX-5 which combine a 30mm drop in height with less body-roll and a more controlled ride. The springs can be supplied in kit form for £195 or installed for £495.
The braking system has been improved with the fitment of upgraded front brake pads, designed to offer superior braking performance for fast road or track day use. These parts can be supplied for £150 or fitted for £195.
