Mercedes-AMG GLC 43: complete guide

Mercedes-AMG has revealed the GLC 43, the Affalterbach-based brand’s answer to the Porsche Macan Turbo and the Jaguar F-Pace S. The new SUV shares an engine with the recently announced AMG C 43 4Matic Coupe.

Power, styling and chassis upgrades will ensure the GLC 43 become one of the fastest and most aggressive mid-size SUVs money can buy. We take a look at what’s new. Put the Mercedes GLC in our car configurator to see the deals on offer.

Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 styling

Affalterbach-tuned Mercedes models tend to feature a revised styling package to set them apart from lesser models, and the the GLC 43 is no different. The front bumper is deeper, the air intake wider, and the grille tweaked with extra chrome detailing. The back features four menacing tailpipes poking from beneath the rear bumper.

Changes to the cabin are more subtle. The instrument cluster graphics have been revised, while the flat-bottomed steering wheel and sports seats both feature matching red stitching.

Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 engine

At the heart of any AMG model is a suitably over-the-top engine, and the GLC 43 lives up to tradition. A 3.0-litre V6 engine is supplemented by two turbochargers, pushing out 362hp and 384lb ft of torque.

The resulting 4.9-second 0-62mph time is just 0.1 seconds shy of a Porsche Macan Turbo, while top speed is limited to 155mph. Mercedes’ silky nine-speed automatic gearbox has been tuned to deliver shifts quick enough to keep up with the serious pace.

Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 driving

To keep all of that shove in check, AMG has redesigned the GLC’s front suspension geometry and stiffened up the rear. The 4Matic four-wheel-drive system sends 69 per cent of the engine’s power to the rear wheels for a sporty yet secure handling balance.

A set of 19-inch alloy wheels (21-inch units are optional) house brake disks that measure an enormous 360mm up front – larger than a Suzuki Celerio’s whole wheel – more than big enough to heave this 1,845kg SUV to a halt in a sufficiently face-bending manner.

Mercedes GLC prices and release date

Order books for the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 are due to open on 4 April, with deliveries beginning in June 2016. Prices have yet to be confirmed, but we’d expect it to cost around £48,000.
