Convertible Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet revealed

AMG – Mercedes’ performance arm – has revealed its new flagship S-Class Cabriolet. The powerful and lavishly-equipped S65 Cabriolet will compete against the likes of the Bentley Continental GTC in the luxury convertible segment.

The S65 can be differentiated from lesser S-Class Cabriolets courtesy of the extra flourishes of chrome that line the more aggressive bumper. Unique 20-inch alloy wheels add some visual drama down the car’s flanks and a tweaked rear bumper houses a pair of chromed exhausts.

Much of the cabin is carried over from the regular S-Class Cabriolet. This means the S65 will comfortably seat four adults whether the roof’s up or down. The front two occupants are treated to sports seats trimmed in diamond-quilted nappa leather.

A three-layer fabric roof can be opened at speeds up to 30mph and is available in four colours – black, dark blue, beige and dark red. Mercedes’ Aircap system deflects air around the cabin to make sure your hair remains unruffled when the roof is down.

Chopping the roof off a coupe tends to adversely affect a car’s rigidity, resulting in a jiggly feeling when driving. Mercedes engineers say that, thanks to additional bracing, the Cabriolet loses nothing in strength compared to the regular S-Class Coupe. The extra metalwork increases kerb weight by 80kg – hardly a noticeable penalty on a 2,255kg car.

The S65 rides on Mercedes’ Airmatic air suspension system, tuned for a sportier driving experience compared to lesser S-Class Cabriolets.

Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet engines

The hand built 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 is the same unit found in the S65 Coupe. It produces 621hp and a sizeable 738lb ft of torque – enough to hammer the S65 from 0-62mph in just 4.1 seconds and on to a top speed limited to 155mph. The optional AMG Driver’s pack can raise that second figure to 186mph.

The engine is mated to a seven-speed automatic gearbox, which can be set to one of three modes – Controlled Efficiency, Sport or Manual. Claimed fuel economy stands at 23.5mpg.

Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet price

Prices for the S65 have yet to be confirmed, but we expect it to cost £10,000 more than the S65 Coupe. This means the Cabriolet could cost around £195,000.

Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet release date

UK deliveries are set to begin in April, while the car’s public debut is due to take place at the Detroit Motor Show in January.
