Mercedes will expand its range of SUVs in 2019 with the launch of the all new GLB. The new model will be a relatively compact family SUV with looks inspired by the classically functional lines of the G-Class (affectionately dubbed the G Wagen).
This new 4×4 will sit between the compact GLA and the family-sized GLC in the German brand’s range and should offer a more off-road focused alternative to the current crop of more style-driven SUVs. We’ve not yet seen the new model but Mercedes’ Ener-G Force Concept (shown throughout) gives us a basic idea of what it could look like.
New Mercedes GLB SUV styling
The new GLB is expected to draw inspiration from the Mercedes Ener-G Force Concept from 2012. A bluff front end and slab-sided body are expected to take the boxy utilitarian looks of the current G-Class and add a generous helping of modern Mercedes design cues.
Elements borrowed from the GLC, such as the rounded headlights and numerous air intakes, should help the GLB look more like a compact premium SUV than a scaled-down G-Class. An optional off-road pack, complete with more rugged bumpers and better ground clearance, is expected to be offered to help it cope with the rigours of occasional off-roading, too.
New Mercedes GLB SUV interior
The new GLB’s interior isn’t expected to be based on the current G-Class’ cabin – it’ll probably make use of a similarly slick dashboard design as the current range of Mercedes SUVs. A number of chunky details could join a free-standing infotainment screen to hint at the car’s clearer off-road focus, however.
A seven-seat model, using a stretched version of the same chassis, may also be developed. This version will, however, probably be launched after the release of the standard five-seat GLB.
New Mercedes GLB SUV engines and driving
This new SUV is expected to be based on the 2017 A-Class’ chassis and will probably be available with the same newly developed 2.0-litre diesel engine as the latest E-Class. Both front and four-wheel drive models will be available, as will a high-performance AMG GLB 45 model with a 400hp, 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine.
New Mercedes GLB SUV price and release date
The GLB is expected to go on sale in 2019, priced to fill the gap between the current GLA and GLC. Entry-level models will probably set you back approximately £30,000 while top-spec GLB 45 versions could cost close to £50,000.
