New 2.2-litre diesel engine for Jeep Cherokee

Jeep has announced a new, more powerful diesel engine for the Cherokee SUV range. The 2.2-litre unit replaces the older 170hp 2.0-litre and offers more power while also using less fuel. In addition, more equipment is now standard across the range.

New engine

The new turbodiesel will be available with either 185 or 200hp and offers improved fuel economy and performance. Both get a nine-speed automatic gearbox as standard – helping the car accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.7 seconds and on to 126mph. Equipped with stop/start, it returns a fairly impressive 49.5 mpg and emits 150g/km of CO2.

With 325lb ft of torque, the 2.2-litre Cherokee makes an ideal towing car, enhanced by a standard four-wheel-drive system. The 185hp version comes in Longitude and Longitude+ trims while the 200hp comes only in top-spec Limited trim with a low-range mode to improve off-road and towing performance.

New standard equipment

Jeep has increased the kit levels across the Cherokee range, not just for this top-spec engine. Models now get an electric bootlid, automatic lights and windscreen wipers, electrically adjustable seats and an anti-dazzle rear-view mirror.

Safety conscious drivers can select the Technology Group pack on the top-spec Limited model. It includes lane departure warning, auto-dipping headlights, front collision warning, blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control.

The Cherokee 2.2-litre diesel costs from £30,845 for the 185hp version in Longitude trim up to £37,995 for the 200hp Limited – around £3,000 more than the previous top-spec Trailhawk edition. The Cherokee 2.2 is now available for order.
