Seen as a spiritual successor to the hydropneumatic system Citroen pioneered in the 1960s, the new design replaces the rubber bump stops found in conventional suspension, with an additional shock absorber that’s said to give it a ‘magic-carpet ride’. Citroen has already given us an idea of what we can expect by fitting a prototype system to the C4 Cactus development car pictured here.
Speaking to carwow at the launch of the new C3, Pierre Monferrini – Citroen’s head of future products – said “We won’t have this brand new technology on this car [the new C3], but you know we are working on new suspension technology. It [the suspension] was presented on a C4 Cactus, so it would make sense that it would be the first car to get it.”
Asked whether he could confirm the new Cactus would indeed be the first car the new system would be fitted to, a smiling Monferrini said ”It’s a good question and you have good intuition”. The suspension will be just one element to what the company has coined the Citroën Advanced Comfort project.
Construction will be another and we can expect the new Cactus to feature improved rigidity – seen as crucial to reducing NVH (Noise Vibration and Harshness). Replacing spot welds with bonding adhesives will, says Citroen, allow the company to reduce torsional flex by up to 20 per cent.
Seat comfort is another key feature in the development of the new Cactus and one that Citroen has already focussed on in the new C3 – it gets a two-part foam construction that is said to take the edge off bumps transmitted into the cabin.
Launched in 2014, the current Cactus spearheaded a new design direction for Citroen and it already has one of the most soothing rides in its class. The new model is expected to build on the huge success of the current car – European sales have already far exceeded 100,000 units.
