2018 Mercedes CLS Coupe price, specs and release date

Eagle-eyed photographers have spotted Mercedes’ swoopy CLS Coupe being tested on German roads before it goes on sale in 2018. These photos courtesy of Motor Authority give us our first glimpse at what this elegant yet practical four-door coupe look like.

If you can’t wait until 2018 to get behind the wheel of a new car, check out the latest Mercedes CLS deals available on the existing model. If you’re not sure what to buy, read our list of the best coupes on sale or our top 10 sports cars with four sets list for help making a decision.

2019 Mercedes CLS Coupe – styling

A thick layer of camouflage disguises the CLS’ more delicate features but, through the psychedelic vinyl wrap, we can see it sports a far curvier roof than either the E- or S-Class. In profile, you’d be hard pressed to spot the two rear doors thanks to its distinctly Coupe-like silhouette while a steeply raked rear bootlid and broad grille reinforce its ground-hugging stance.

The new model should take a leaf from the latest E-Class’ book and swap the old car’s lumpy headlights for a slick new pair of full LED units. The new car’s rear appears to share its shapely proportions with the upcoming E-Class Coupe, too.

The CLS’ cabin isn’t expected to differ greatly from the E-Class (left) and S-Class (right) shown here…

2019 Mercedes CLS Coupe – interior

The new CLS will be built using the same platform as the latest E-Class – albeit with a few modifications to make it both longer and wider. As a result, we expect it to offer greater cabin space and more legroom for rear seat passengers than the outgoing model. Its slinky roof design may, however, eat into headroom considerably. Buyers looking for an improved dose of practicality may be disappointed, however – Mercedes is not expected to offer the CLS as a spacious Shooting Brake.

The CLS will bridge the gap between the E-Class cars and the ultra-luxurious S-Class models. It should, therefore, come loaded with buckets of standard equipment and a gorgeous interior trimmed with numerous sumptuous materials. Taking inspiration from other luxurious Mercedes models, we expect it to feature a broad dashboard design with signature chromed air vents and vast infotainment displays.

2019 Mercedes CLS Coupe – engines and driving

The most popular engine in the CLS engine range will probably be a 2.0-litre diesel engine that should return in the region of 70mpg. A more powerful 258hp 350d model should also be offered that’ll be able to sprint from 0-62mph in approximately six seconds.

An all-new turbocharged 3.0-litre straight six engine could also be offered alongside a high-performance 600hp 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 developed by Mercedes’ AMG tuning division.

2019 Mercedes CLS Coupe – price and release date

The new CLS is expected to go on sale in late 2018. No official prices have been announced but you’ll probably have to set aside around £50,000 for an entry-level model and nearly £90,000 for a range-topping version.
