Renault hopes to make choosing the perfect hot hatch even more difficult when its new Megane Renaultsport goes on sale. Images courtesy of carscoops show this latest entry to the superfast hatchback arena undergoing testing ahead of a rumoured appearance at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.
This new car will be more powerful, and look significantly more aggressive, than the standard car when it heads into battle against the likes of the Volkswagen Golf GTI. Large exhausts, a generous rear spoiler and vast air intakes are all expected to adorn this latest Renaultsport offering when it goes on sale.
New Renault Megane RS styling
The prototype in these pictures has clearly undergone some rather hasty surgery to prevent its large alloy wheels and tyres from rubbing against the standard Megane’s bodywork. The finished car will most likely boast broader wings to more elegantly cover a set of new wheels, however.
The two exhaust tips poking out from beneath the rear bumper suggest the finished car will boast a centrally mounted exhaust tip and a pair of restyled bumpers. The need to both cool its powerful engine and make it as aerodynamically slippery as possible will mean the Megane RS could feature a vast new grille and a racing-inspired rear diffuser.
New Renault Megane RS interior
The new RS’ interior will probably gain a healthy dose of sporty features, too. Heavily bolstered seats could be fitted to hold you firmly in place through the corners and a number of revised trim pieces should help you tell this hot hatch apart from its more sober siblings.
New Renault Megane RS engines and driving
Renault’s racy new offering will reportedly be powered by a highly tuned version of the French firm’s 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. A six-speed manual or a six-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox will transfer approximately 300hp to the front wheels propelling this pocket-sized hatchback to 62mph from rest is significantly less than the 5.8-second time set by the current generation Megane RS.
New Renault Megane RS price and release date
Renault hasn’t released any official details but it’s been suggested the new Megane RS will make a public appearance at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March. Renault traditionally offers its RS models with a selection of setups ranging from road-focussed Renaultsport chassis to race-ready Cup spec versions. When it goes on sale in late 2017 or early 2018, this top-spec Megane will probably cost between £25,000 to £28,000 depending on final specification.
