Nissan X-Trail gets 1.6 petrol engine and lower £21,995 starting price

Nissan has added a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine to the X-Trail range – and it’s the cheapest version you can buy, costing from £21,995.

It is claimed to get between 44 and 45mpg depending on the trim level you pick, and will accelerate the SUV from 0-60mph in 9.7 seconds, and on to a top speed of 124mph.

The engine, called the ‘DIG-T 163′, is only available in two-wheel-drive form, and comes with a six-speed manual gearbox. It has 161hp and 177lb ft of torque and will come with stop/start technology as well to save fuel in traffic.

The engine is available across all trim levels in the X-Trail range, and you can still pick a seven-seat option on the Acenta, N-Tec and Tekna variants.

The model is on sale now, and the first cars should be with customers by August 2015.
