The new GTI could take inspiration from the Vision GTI concept, shown here…

2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI styling

We’ve yet to see official images of the new Golf, so it’s hard to work out what the new GTI will look like. It seems likely, however, that it’ll be inspired by the Vision GTI Concept, shown above. A more aggressive front bumper with bigger air intakes than the standard car will probably be joined by subtle red trim detailing and larger alloy wheels. A redesigned rear will almost certainly feature multiple large exhaust pipes and signature GTI badging.

The new GTI could spawn a limited edition Clubsport version, similar to the current model shown here…

2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI engines and driving

The new GTI will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that will drive the front wheels through a DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It’s been suggested it could boast the world’s first 10-speed dual-clutch unit, but no such details have been officially confirmed. Entry-level models will probably produce approximately 260hp, while limited edition Clubsport variants could boast as much as 325hp.

VW could use new steel polymer composite technology to build the new GTI’s body panels – this technology could help cut the weight of many components by as much as 30 per cent and should help boost both fuel economy, performance and handling.

Keen GTI fans will probably have to wait until 2019 for the new car’s launch

2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI price and release date

No official details have been announced, but we expect the new GTI to appear in UK showrooms in 2019. Thanks to its significantly more powerful engine, the new GTI could cost slightly more than the current car – a price tag of close to £30,000 for entry-level models is possible.
