VW Tiguan R price, specs and release date

VW looks set to release a high-performance version of its Tiguan crossover in 2017. Images courtesy of Car Advice show this upcoming R model undergoing testing. It’s set to become one of the most potent compact SUVs on the market when it goes on sale and will compete against a rival from VW‘s sister brand, the upcoming Seat Ateca Cupra.

The new Tiguan R prototype, left, looks identical to the current R-Line model, right…

2017 VW Tiguan R – styling

This prototype’s bodykit, trim pieces and alloy wheels are all a match for the standard R-line model. The only hint to the R’s added performance comes at the back. In place of the standard car’s twin exhaust pipes, this prototype sports four shiny exhaust tips – a sign that a more powerful engine sits under its black bonnet.

The new Tiguan R’s interior will look similar to the standard car’s cabin, shown here…

2017 VW Tiguan R – interior

The standard Tiguan’s interior should receive a host of sporty upgrades so, from behind the wheel at least, you’ll don’t feel like you’re driving a school-run SUV. A pair of more supportive seats should help hold you in place at speed while plush new trim should feature on the doors and dashboard.

2017 VW Tiguan R – driving and engines

The Tiguan R will almost certainly feature a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol shared with the Golf GTI, Golf R and the Audi S3, among others. In this high-riding SUV it’ll probably produce around 300hp – significantly more than the current range-topping 237hp diesel-powered BiTDi model and enough for a 0-62mph time of approximately six seconds.

Just like the Golf R, power will be sent to all four wheels via a twin-clutch automatic gearbox. We expect the R model to feature firmer, lower suspension and bigger brakes than the standard car, too.

2017 VW Tiguan R – price and release date

The Tiguan R’s release date hasn’t been confirmed but, thanks to its use of tried-and-tested components from the VW range, it shouldn’t take too long for a production ready model to appear. It should make its public debut in early 2017 while the first deliveries should be completed before 2018. It will, however, cost significantly more than the current range-topping £38,640 model.
