Standard checks for used cars

These Agreed Terms are applicable to partners advertising used cars listings on the Carwow websites.

As an online platform, we expect all retailers to carry out Standard Checks to a Good Industry Practice on used cars and vehicles ahead of listing on our Websites to ensure quality and peace of mind for consumers.

The responsibility and liability remains at all times with the retailer to determine and undertake the appropriate inspections and checks on vehicles and the list is not intended to exhaustive but we would expect the following Standard Checks to be carried out on the vehicle: 

VEHICLE HISTORY 

1. Obtain a vehicle history report 

2. Check for:

a) Accident history, including major repairs or insurance claims.

b) Title status: Ensure the title is clean (not salvage or rebuilt).

c) Ownership history: Identify previous number of owners and vehicle usage (personal, fleet, rental).

3. Verify there are:

a) No outstanding recalls.

b) No liens or loans attached to the vehicle (see finance checks below).

VEHICLE ID AND VERIFICATION 

1. VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) Check:

a) Verify the VIN matches on all key components: dashboard, door sticker, and any additional engine or chassis stamps.

b) Cross-check VIN against:

i)Vehicle history report.

ii) DMV records for title and registration.

2. Look for signs of VIN tampering or replacement.

3. Check that the odometer reading matches records and hasn't been tampered with.

FINANCE CHECKS 

1. Outstanding Loans or Liens:

a) Confirm with relevant financial institutions or DMV that there are no liens against the vehicle.

b) Obtain and document proof of lien release if applicable.

2. Loan or Lease Status:

a) Verify the car is not currently under a lease or loan agreement.

3. Seller's Ownership Proof:

a) Validate that the seller has the right to sell the vehicle (if not already in the dealer’s inventory).

4. For dealerships offering financing:

a) Ensure the vehicle meets internal financing guidelines and is clear for resale.

MECHANICAL INSPECTION 

1. Industry standard checks on the Engine, Transmission, Suspension, Steering, Brakes, Cooling System, Battery and Electrical Systems for any faults. 

EXTERIOR CONDITION

1. Exterior Condition Inspection for:

a) Paint damage (scratches, chips, fading).

b) Dents or body panel misalignments.

c) Rust or corrosion, especially in common problem areas (wheel wells, undercarriage).

2. Check windshield and windows for cracks or chips; and 

3. Verify condition of lights (headlights, brake lights, indicators) and mirrors.

INTERIOR CONDITION

1. Assess upholstery and seating for:

a) Tears, stains, or wear.

b) Functionality of seat adjustments.

2. Test all controls:

a) Air conditioning, heater, radio, and infotainment systems.

b) Power windows, locks, and seat heaters.

3. Check for unusual odors, such as smoke or mildew.

TIRES AND WHEELS 

1. Check for:

a) Adequate tread depth.

b) Even wear across all tires.

c) Absence of cracks, punctures, or bulges.

2. Verify condition of wheels/rims:

a) Look for curb damage or bent rims.

SAFETY SYSTEMS

1. Ensure functionality of:

a) Airbags (no warning lights on the dashboard).

b) Seat belts and their retractors.

2. Verify that safety features (e.g., ABS, traction control, lane departure) are operational.

ROAD TEST

1. Evaluate performance in real-world driving and ensure:

a) Smooth acceleration and braking.

b) Proper alignment and no pulling to one side.

2. Absence of unusual noises (engine, suspension, tires).

3. Test in different conditions (e.g., low speed, highway).

DOCUMENTATION

1. Verify and prepare:

a) Valid title and registration.

b) Emissions test or inspection certificate, if required.

c) Maintenance records, if available.

PRICING ASSESSMENT

1. Conduct market research:

a) Compare similar models with the same make, year, and mileage.

b) Adjust price for condition, features, and recent repairs.
