Jaecoo 7 vs MG HS: which one offers the best value for money?

Chinese car brands are becoming an increasingly popular choice for family SUV buyers, and the Jaecoo 7 and MG HS are two very strong contenders. Both offer generous standard equipment, modern features, and attractive pricing, but which one gives you the better overall value?

We’ve compared the Jaecoo 7 and MG HS on equipment, pricing, and the latest new, used, and lease deals to help you decide which SUV is the smarter choice.

As both cars are available with plug-in hybrid powertrains, we’ve based this comparison on the equivalent 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid versions in each model’s highest trim level, as we’d recommend these over the petrol and self-charging hybrid alternatives. They’re also the most expensive versions you can buy, so you’ll get a clear picture of everything each car has to offer.

Which has better equipment?

First up, let’s compare their equipment when you buy them new. Both cars are known for coming with plenty of kit for all your needs, but which one has more on offer?

As the table above shows, both cars share much of the same technology, but the Jaecoo 7 adds more sophisticated features such as a head-up display, ventilated front seats, and a 540-degree panoramic camera.

Buying new

Next up, let’s look at buying both. You’re more likely to finance your car, so the total cost will usually include interest and additional fees. These costs can vary depending on the type of deal, when you buy, and current interest rates.

For our calculations, we used PCP finance, a flexible car finance option where your monthly payments cover much of the car’s expected depreciation rather than its full purchase price.

Using Jaecoo and MG’s own websites, we’ve assumed a deposit of £5,000, a three-year only term and annual mileage of 10,000 miles. We’ve also assumed that you’ve returned the car to the finance company after a three-year term.

Here’s a breakdown of all the costs you’d be expecting. Note that at the time of writing, the Jaecoo 7 had a 0.9% APR and 0.89% annual fixed rate interest, hence why we’ve added the total amount payable for reference.

The figures above show that it’s cheaper to buy an MG HS than a Jaecoo 7 on the same finance term and annual mileage. This is largely because the MG HS is available with 0% APR, while MG was also offering a £1,000 test drive voucher and a £2,250 manufacturer deposit contribution at the time of writing.

This is a good reminder that it’s always worth checking for manufacturer incentives when comparing finance deals, as they can make a significant difference to the overall cost.

Buying used

Buying used is another option to consider. We compared two equivalent plug-in hybrid models on Carwow from the same model year with similar mileage to see which worked out cheapest.

We found two used deals from 2025 that already have around 10,000 miles on the clock, and here’s how much they cost:

This shows that, even with slightly higher mileage and being registered in the same year, a used MG HS is still around £4,000 less expensive than a used Jaecoo 7. Remember, though, that used deals change all the time, and you may find a real bargain if you have good timing.

It’s also worth noting that the MG HS has been on sale in the UK for much longer than the Jaecoo 7. The HS arrived in October 2019, whereas the Jaecoo 7 didn’t launch until January 2025. That means there’s a much larger pool of used MG HS models on the market, giving you a better chance of finding a bargain.

Sticking with the three-year ownership theme, it’s also important to consider depreciation – the amount a car loses in value over time. This varies depending on the model and a range of other factors.

But how much does depreciation differ between the Jaecoo 7 and the MG HS?

A new car typically loses 15-35% of its value in the first year, before depreciation slows to around 10-15% annually. By this point, both the Jaecoo 7 and MG HS will already have experienced much of their initial depreciation. We therefore used valuation data from Cap HPI to estimate their future values.

Based on Cap HPI trade-in valuations for a vehicle in good condition, a Jaecoo 7 Luxury is expected to depreciate by around £16,900 over three years and 30,000 miles. Meanwhile, the MG HS Trophy is expected to lose around £13,925 of its value over the same period and mileage.

Lower depreciation means the MG HS should retain more of its value, helping to reduce its overall cost of ownership.

Leasing

Finally, there’s leasing. Like we’ve done with the PCP deals, we’ve assumed a three-year lease, 10,000 miles per year and a 12-month initial payment. The figures are based on the plug-in hybrid versions in each model’s highest trim.

Here are some leasing deals available on Carwow at the time of writing and how they stack up against each other:

These deals show that you could save around £3,000 by leasing the plug-in hybrid MG HS in the highest trim over three years compared with the equivalent Jaecoo 7. You’ll also pay around £780 less upfront and around £65 less per month.

So, which one is the best value?

Overall, the MG HS offers better value for money. It’s cheaper to buy used, costs less to lease and is expected to depreciate less over three years, helping to reduce its overall cost of ownership.

That said, if having more equipment is a priority, the Jaecoo 7 may be worth considering thanks to features such as a head-up display, ventilated front seats and a 540-degree panoramic camera.
