Used SUV FAQs

Right now, Carwow’s expert reviews team recommends the Toyota Yaris Cross as the best used SUV. Yes, it’s on the small side, but it’s roomier than you’d think and comes with a good-sized boot. Plus, the 1.5-litre hybrid engine is exceptionally economical — 60mpg all day long, 70mpg if you’re trying — and makes the Yaris Cross feel zippy around town. It may not be the most fun car in the world, but what gives the Yaris Cross a leg-up is Toyota’s usual high levels of quality and reliability, not to mention up to 10 years of warranty if serviced annually.

As ever, if you want reliability the best thing to do is to buy Japanese, so SUVs such as the Toyota RAV4 and the Mazda CX-5 make for great reliable used SUVs to buy. There’s another good choice, though — the Dacia Duster, which finished top in the most recent Driver Power Top 50 Cars To Own list, beating out the likes of the Tesla Model 3 and Toyota Yaris to do so. UK owners really rate its reliability and quality.

This has to be the Dacia Duster, the car that finished in the number one spot in the most recent Driver Power Top 50 Cars To Own list. UK owners love its spacious boot and cabin, its simple control layouts, and its sturdy reliability.

A huge amount of an SUV’s long life expectancy has to do with how you look after it. With reasonable care and regular servicing, you can get a well-built car to last for hundreds of thousands of miles. In fact, a scientific survey in the US found that, with only reasonable care, a Toyota Land Cruiser can easily reach 250,000 miles before it falls apart. Sounds like a good bet to us.

As ever with used SUVs, don’t focus too hard on mileage, as its condition and history count for more. Equally, an SUV with lots and lots of gentle motorway miles on the clock may be in better overall condition than one that has lower mileage, but it’s been spending lots and lots of time off-road. However, the SUVs that tend to wear their miles the best are the likes of the Toyota RAV4 and Yaris Cross, as well as the Dacia Duster.

There’s no hard and fast rule when it comes to how much mileage is a good mileage for a used SUV. The car’s condition and its service history are far more important, but obviously any car that’s gone past 100,000 miles is at least likely to need some replacement parts or some work in the future, so while a six-figure mileage shouldn’t automatically put you off, you should be asking some more questions about its history.
