The Audi A3 is a posh family hatchback which, even though it shares a lot with the Volkswagen Golf, feels a cut above the rest in terms of its quality and prestige. 

Now in its fourth generation, the Audi A3 feels a little old-fashioned next to some of Audi’s latest cars such as the Q6 e-tron or the A5 - but it’s all the better for it, because that means you get a very straightforward interior that’s a joy to use.

Alternatives to the A3 include other posh hatchbacks such as the Mercedes A-Class, BMW 1 Series or higher-end versions of the Volkswagen Golf. It also has electric competition from the likes of the Tesla Model 3, which is comparable in price.

Audi offers the A3 in a wide range of variants, though - not only are there petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid engines on offer, but there’s also an A3 saloon and even the powerful and sporty S3 and RS3.

There should be something for everyone in the A3 line-up, then, but don’t expect vast amounts of space for passengers or luggage - it is still quite a compact hatch, after all.
