Colour guide
Metallic - Anemone blue
Free
This very dark, almost navy-esque blue is a decent choice if you want a more subdued shade for your VW Golf, but don’t want to opt for a more traditional black or dark grey. Because it’s a fairly inoffensive colour, it shouldn’t put off too many used buyers, either. However, like a black or dark grey, Anemone Blue will need to be maintained well to prevent it being blemished by dirt, scratches and swirl marks.
Metallic - Crystal Ice Blue
Free
Befitting its name, this VW Golf colour has a frosty hue which is amplified even further by the paint’s metallic finish. Like all light colours on cars, it is exceptionally poor at masking any dirt marks on the bodywork, so be prepared to spend many a weekend scrubbing your car back to its bright and shiny best.

Metallic - Dolphin grey
Free
Dolphin Grey, in spite of being actually a metallic shade, just ends up looking like a duller, less interesting version of Moonstone Grey. Save yourself a couple of hundred pounds and get the cheaper, nicer paint.
Metallic - Grenadilla black
Free
If you want a bit of stealthy menace to your VW Golf, then you may want to consider Grenadilla Black. Not only does the dark paint scheme give the car a more understated look, but it helps amplify some of the exterior features like the illuminated VW badge on the front grille. Be warned that black paints are notorious for showing up dirt, scratches and swirl marks from when you haven’t washed the car properly, so you’ll need to keep good care of this paint to keep it looking spick and span.
Solid - Urano grey
Free
Urano Grey has the advantage of being free of charge, but that’s about where it ends — it’s one of the dullest and flattest colours ever to adorn a car and the Gold 8’s droopy nose styling makes it look even worse. If you want your Golf to look good, you’ll have to spend.
Special solid - Moonstone grey
Free
Moonstone Grey is technically a solid but it has a very glossy finish that could almost fool you into thinking it’s one of those special metallic, semi-matte colours. It can look very plain unless you dress it up with some decent wheels and an R-Line bodykit, though.
Special solid - Pure white
Free
VW seems to be a bit cheeky, charging extra for what is such a plain, solid colour option as this. It doesn’t do much to lift the Golf’s styling and there’s the unmistakeable whiff of holiday hire car about it.
Solid two tone - Urano grey with black roof
£505
Want a colour combination that’s a bit more exciting than just dark grey? VW has you covered with a spec that combines Urano Grey with a contrast black roof. Granted, it isn’t the most exciting two-tone paint option you can spec on the Golf, but it could be ideal if you’re after a more out-there color scheme that also isn’t too outrageous. You can only get this two-tone paint on Style and R-Line models.
Metallic - Oyster silver
£730
Silvers have traditionally been popular colours on new cars, so don’t be surprised to see many VW Golfs in the shade of paint you see here. It helps that Oyster Silver is a nice colour for the Golf in general: it suits the car’s smart styling pretty well, and the metallic finish gives the car an even classier look. This bright silver will be a pain to keep looking pristine and shiny, though.
Special solid two tone - Moonstone grey with black roof
£735
In comparison with the two tone Urano Grey options, it’s a bit easier to spot the contrast in colours with the brighter Moonstone Grey. Both paints do at least share the same trait of being more visually distinctive than the regular monotone paint finish, while also being discreet and inoffensive. This Moonstone grey two-tone paint is only available on Style and R-Line cars.
Premium metallic - Kings red
£885
Kings Red is a terrific colour, and one that works especially well on the sporty GTE, GTD, and GTI models. The only problem is the price — VW has a cheek charging this much extra for what is basically a nice metallic red.
Premium solid two tone - Pure white with black roof
£940
White paints are great at highlighting colour contrasting elements on cars, so it’s no real shock that Pure White works very nicely with a black roof. There are a couple of downsides with this colour combo: the white paint is still a standard solid, rather than a more eye-catching metallic or pearl effect one, and you can’t spec it on Life and Match versions of the Golf.
Premium paint - Oryx white mother of pearl effect
£1,220
Do you like the Pure White paint option for the Golf, but would prefer it to be a bit more exciting to look at? Then VW has you covered with the Oryx white colour you see here. In comparison with the fairly flat finish of Pure white, Oryx white has a much more upmarket sheen thanks to its pearlescent finish. It’s a very nice paint, though it should be considering it’s the most expensive colour you can pick for your VW Golf.
Metallic two tone - Anemone blue with black roof
£1,235
Dark blue with a black roof may not sound like the most exciting colour combo for a car, though on the VW Golf it does work surprisingly well. The hue of the blue is just bright enough for the contrast roof to stand out, yet the tones still work if a discreet and understated look is what you’re after. Definitely worth bearing mind if you want an inconspicuous two-tone paint scheme for your Golf.
Metallic two tone - Crystal ice blue with black roof
£1,235
Most of the colours on the VW Golf come with a two-tone alternative, and Crystal Ice Blue is but one example of that. Because this frosty baby blue is an already light shade, it works nicely as a contrast to the plain black roof - just be aware it’s a bit more expensive than the regular monotone Crystal Ice Blue paint, and it’s only available on Style and R-Line models.
Metallic two tone - Dolphin grey with black roof
£1,235
Dolphin Grey is already a decent colour option for the VW Golf, so there’s no real shock that it still works well as a two-tone option. Granted, the colour contrast won’t be that noticeable in poorly lit environments, but this could be the colour option for you if a subtle two-tone paint job is what you’re after.
Metallic two tone - Oyster silver with black roof
£1,235
Being a bright and shiny metallic silver, Oyster Silver was already one of the VW Golf’s more eye-catching colours, and the addition of a two-tone roof makes it even more distinctive. Do bear in mind that, as with all of the Golf’s two-tone paint options, you can’t get them on lower-spec cars - if you want any VW Golf with a black contrast roof, you have to spec it in either the Style or R-Line trim.
Premium metallic two tone - Kings red with black roof
£1,390
This two-tone colour option takes the already striking shade of Kings Red, and makes it even more eye-catching with a contrasting black roof. The aggressive styling on the R-Line trim is a good match for this colour scheme in particular - though if that hot hatch-inspired trim isn’t quite for you, you can have this two tone setup on the less sporty Style trim.
Premium pearlescent two tone - Oryx white premium mother-of-pearl with black roof
£1,725
This may look very similar to the Pure White two tone paint, but there is one noticeable difference. Whereas Pure White is a solid tone, Oryx White is a pearlescent one, so it has a lovely premium sheen to it (especially under bright lights). We’ll let you decide whether it’s worth paying that much extra for it, though.
