Jeep SUVs Discover the Jeep SUV range and compare new, used and leasing deals

Jeep is the original SUV, having turned its war-winner into a civilian car in the late 1940s with the first Jeep CJ model (which literally stands for Civilian Jeep). Since then, Jeep has gone on to massive success with models such as the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, and it’s now starting to roll out all-electric models.

Jeep SUV models: current range

Jeep’s SUV range stretches from the tiny (and electric) Avenger to the hulking Grand Cherokee.

Jeep Avenger

Jeep’s littlest car, the Avenger, can be had with just front-wheel drive and a tiny 1.2-litre petrol engine. Which sounds very un-Jeepy, but actually it’s quite a characterful thing to drive, even if it’s too cramped in the back. Want to go off-road? Get the four-wheel drive Avenger 4XE hybrid.

Jeep Avenger Electric

Borrowing the same electric motor and 54kWh battery as the Peugeot E-2008, the Avenger Electric is small enough to be nippy in the city, and has just about enough range (up to 250 miles) for a longer run. Slow to charge, though, and the back seat is tiny.

Jeep Compass

The Compass is one of Jeep’s oldest models (it’s due to be replaced soon) and that shows. It’s on the small side inside, and some of the cabin materials are really cheap and nasty. Average to drive at best, and the plug-in hybrid 4XE model is compromised for boot space and long-range fuel economy.

Jeep Renegade

The little Renegade looks a bit odd — the classic Jeep styling doesn’t quite work with its compact SUV proportions — but it’s not bad to drive, and surprisingly capable off-road if you get a four-wheel drive version. Plug-in hybrid doesn’t work very well.

Jeep Wrangler

The Wrangler is a direct descendant of the original Willys Jeep, and is staggeringly accomplished off-road. Crude and noisy on-tarmac it may be, but it looks cool, and there’s nothing more fun than taking a Wrangler’s roof and doors off and heading out into the forests.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Grand Cherokee is Jeep’s biggest SUV in the UK. It has a plug-in hybrid engine that makes it ideal for smooth inner-city driving, but is still just as capable off-road as a Jeep should be. It has a nice cabin, too.

Jeep SUVs FAQs

Not especially. Jeep didn’t feature at all in the most recent Driver Power survey, but the company has an unlovely reputation for bits breaking.
Yes, it is. It’s about the same size as a Nissan Qashqai (although less roomy inside) and thanks to its ride height and tall roof, it’s definitely an SUV.
Yes, it is. The Renegade might be small (it shares a chassis with the Fiat 500X) but it has enough ride height and a boxy body to be classified as an SUV, even if it is a small one.
The biggest Jeep model is the massive Grand Wagoneer, a car that’s only sold in the US market, but which is about the same size as a Range Rover or a BMW X7. In the UK, the biggest model is the Grand Cherokee (about the size of a BMW X5) and soon there’ll be the new, big all-electric Wagoneer S.
Yes, all of Jeep’s current lineup is available with hybrid power. The small Avenger comes with a 1.2-litre hybrid option that can be had with a rear-mounted motor for four-wheel drive, while the Renegade, Compass, and Grand Cherokee are all available with plug-in hybrid power.
Jeep makes two seven-seat models at the moment — the Grand Cherokee L and the Grand Wagoneer — but neither is available in the UK market.
The smallest Jeep model is the Avenger, which is only 4.0 metres long (about the same as a Ford Fiesta) and which shares its chassis with the Fiat 600 and the Peugeot 2008.
Jeep likes to think of itself as a luxury or premium brand, but the only truly luxurious model it’s sold recently in the UK is the Grand Cherokee, which has a posh cabin, even if it’s a bit short of the likes of Mercedes or Range Rover in quality terms.
